We recently spent some time down south in Tampa,FL during the insane flooding fiasco. All that rain created a water formation at the end of the driveway that turned out to be a perfect place for a frog to lay eggs. Sooooo… the Hutson clan drove home a couple weeks later with a jar full of tadpoles.
I brought the little guys home thinking this would be a great learning experience for the kids. We started to do research on these creepy swimmers and learned a bunch of random facts like, feed them boiled lettuce and clean the food out of the tank if they don’t finish eating it in 2 hours (huh?). We watched some hilarious armature frog life cycle videos on youtube. (Please look up white guy singing Reggae song about the life cycle of a frog. Note: My kids loved it.) I also printed out some fun frog life cycle activities from pinterest you can find here and here. And these sequencing cards are adorable, educational, and my kids have read them every day.
The more I went over these life cycle cards, the more I started relating them to real (human) life. Here is the run down…
Starts with a frog laying eggs. Eggs turn into tadpoles. Tadpoles eat and eat and eat and poop. Next, Tadpoles with legs. These guys are curious little pupils and want to get places. Then, a froglet. Froglets still have that little tail but they are all over the place learning the final things they need to be an adult. Lastly, the final transformation into adult frog. And the cycle starts all over again.
Next week my oldest baby will start Kindergarten and all I can think of is, will my little tadpole with legs be ok? Will he miss me? Will he make friends? Will his teacher like him? The answer to all these questions… I have no idea. But, he knows we love him. He knows we are always here for him. He knows we support him. We are scared and excited and I can not wait to see what my baby tadpole with legs thinks of his new space to become a curious little pupil.
